But the runaway cost of government is not the problem... because no matter what it is, you still need to be able to afford the tax that funds it - which is the property tax.

But once the tax is limited to a reasonable portion of one's income - the level of spending becomes moot and inconsequential - which is what the Breaker accomplishes.

Once enacted, any runaway spending will self correct by virtue of there not being enough money to fund it.

I have to say I was disappointed to see that taxnightmare has joined the 1% vs 99% campaign. The problem is not the 1%. They are in the same property tax boat we all are in. The problem is with our elected officials that have continually increased their hold on all of us by growing government is such a reckless manner financially. The public unions have wielded much more power than the taxpayer and our elected officials lean their way more than they lean our way. There is so much pandering to the union interest as a result of their contributions to campaigns and threats of slowdown or strikes. No one is left to defend our position. We depend on the elected officials to be balanced but we have been disappointed in their lack of interest. I feel they think we are a bottomless pit of revenue. The Public Unions are also a disappointment in that they are not out there trying to make their contribution to society more efficient, responsible, and respectful. I would like to see taxnightmare focus on issues that will identify the waste and over spending and not be dragged into a useless 1% vs 99% debate. If you took all of the 1% money the problem would not be solved. The problem remains and will only get worse if there is no control of the massive unfunded mandates and unfunded liabilities in public pensions and runaway entitlement spending. Our elective officials should be actively pursuing these issues along with controlling waste and corruption. We are indeed tired of greed and waste and hopefully Albany does wake up.

Looks like the tax cap isn't working. From this article it sounds like a town board can override the cap with a 60% vote. According to the article, the town's $11.24 million budget would boost spending 3.29 percent above 2011's level - the cap being 2%. But because of declines in state aid and other sources or revenue, it would require a tax levy of $7.8 million — 11.5 percent higher than this year. So it sounds like caping the budget does nothing to cap the tax.

I am trying to find out if there is anything anywhere to help people who cannot afford school taxes. I have no income and have not been able to find a job for a few years now. I receive assistance like HEAP, Medicaid and special help with some house problems. It is ridiculous, to put it mildly, that someone in my situation has to risk losing my house or not eating because I am being forced to pay for other people's kids to go to school. It is grossly unfair, if not almost criminal that I should have to additionally contribute to pay for a grossly overpaid superintendent and his Cadillac Escalade that the town of Windsor, New York gives him from tax payers money. I do not have, and never have had kids. So why should I be harassed and abused like this? I believe taxes should be based on how many kids people have and not on property value or possibly the combination of the two, but having no kids would waive any school taxes. There can't be that many people like me in any district, where it would have much effect on the tax pool. The people that have kids should make up the small difference. This would be fair and appropriate.

At least when they had the STAR rebate in effect, it would help a little. If nothing else they should bring that back for people like me that have no kids, that have no income and who are on assistance.

Is there anything that anyone has heard of that people can apply for to get help with, a reduction of, or forgiveness of school taxes?

Please respond.

Thank you!

Thanks for writing. So many of us are angry at the unresponsive government we have in the state. I'm happy to see you agree with so many of us that the cap is NOT an answer to the many ills that befall homeowners and middle class families in this state.
I have taken a lot of heat-even from my own members- for praising Silver. Unfortunately it's all about politics. We believe he will work with us and when he does something good we praise him. If you look at previous postings we have also slammed him hard. Cuomo won't even talk to us. Skelos does whatever Cuomo wants him to do...right now we're trying to get Silver to pass real reform in the shape of a circuit breaker. Doing cartoons keeps me sane. If you spend as much time in Albany ( all out of pocket expenses) as we do you'd go over the edge too (and praise Silver??)...it's either cartoons or a whole helluva lot of vino...cartoons don't destroy my liver...keep writing...thanks..and good luck to us all.
